About us

Matsubara Catholic Church is located in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. In 1955, the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (C.I.C.M. being its Latin acronym) began a religious house on the actual premises, where Catholics from the surrounding area gathered for Sunday Mass. On the inauguration of new parish buildings and of the adjacent Oriens Institute, a religious parish was formed which is ministered by the C.I.C.M. missionaries under contract with the Tokyo Archdiocese. Since it began with only a few members, Matsubara Catholic Church has grown to over 1,200 parishioners.

C.I.C.M. is an international religious missionary congregation which was founded by the Belgian diocesan priest Theofiel Verbist in a suburb called Scheut near Brussels. Its Belgian and Dutch missionaries arrived in Japan in 1948. Nowadays Congolese, Indonesian and Filipino members are present in Osaka, Hiroshima and Sendai diocese as well.
